Stop Multi-Tasking for Increased Productivity

On my journey to learn a new role at work, I’ve realized that I’m at a disadvantage whenever I multi-task. I’m usually unable to clearly recall events, provide proper communication and provide the feedback or commentary necessary and when asked.

I can already sense the skepticism in those who are able to successfully do many tasks at once and for this reason, I have put together the advantages of focusing on one task at a time.

With the increase in remote work and remote communication, many of us are having to re-think our use of time and effort to enhance our more digitally focused life.

The decrease in our physical presence at work or in business, begs the need to re-frame what success looks like both in our professional and personal lives. The fact that we are not always able to physically size up ours and other people’s effort and time spent on tasks means that we have to allow the results of focused effort(s) be seen and felt through what is produced and consumed.

This means that, we need to better focus to get the best results and to get them right the first time.

Advantages of NOT Multitasking ;

1. You will listen ( not hear) clearly.

This may apply generally to all things, but specifically, I’m not able to follow most conversations unless I’m giving my complete attention to the details.

2. Better Understand Details

Details such as, what am I required to do, what is Mark and the team required to do and what finished work looks like are details which will build better team work, encourage synergy and refine results.

3. You will be able to provide and receive beneficial feedback

When one is focused on a given task, the details I believe are important for receiving and giving feedback for improvement . There is nothing worse than to be caught off guard about feedback received or given because; 1. The details of the ask were not clearly communicated and/understood. 2 . The feedback doesn’t create a solution.

4. Sparks Creativity

Giving attention to a task will summon your creative juices in the direction that it is being focused. As a non-I.T . person, If you’re trying to understand and problem solve, at a basic level , what an I.T consultant is articulating, I believe that it will benefit a lay person to focus on what is being said so that the right questions can be asked. This will enable people to conjure up fresh perspectives and insights to almost anyone who is listening.

5.  You will be better able to Re-call Events

Albert Einstein said everything should be explained simply. If you’re focused on one activity, you will have better recall of events and your communication skills will be improved. You will be able to teach , solve problems and give valuable information to learners and/or consumers based on the level of attention you had expended to specific details. In our professional lives, this may mean better customer service and in our personal lives, this may foster more fluid conversations.

I’m certain we would benefit from the recommendations above whether it be in our home or work life. The values of listening, getting the details and clearly communicating recommendations becomes valuable for those looking for personal development and enhanced ability to delight customers.
